5 Common Physical Therapy Myths: Busted by a Doctor of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is one of the most powerful, evidence-based tools for pain relief, injury prevention, and performance optimization. Yea... you heard right, even better than stem cells and peptides. But’s this healthcare service is also surrounded by myths that can keep people from getting the help they need. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy and owner of a private sports PT practice (Art of PT Sports Physical Therapy LLC), I’m here to discuss 5 common misconceptions I hear about PT in my clinic every week.

Whether you're recovering from an injury or just looking to move and feel better, clearing up these myths could be the first step toward a healthier, stronger you.

Myth # 1-- You need a referral to see a physical therapist

In most states, including Illinois, you have direct access to physical therapy. That means you do not need a doctor’s referral to schedule a PT evaluation.

This myth holds a lot of people back. It especially hold back athletes and active adults who want to treat pain early. If you're experiencing joint, muscle, or nerve pain, you can skip the long wait at your primary care provider and go straight to a qualified PT.

Myth # 2-- “No pain, no gain” applies to physical therapy

Pain is not the goal in physical therapy. While some discomfort can be part of the healing process (see my previous blog) especially when rebuilding strength or mobility after an injury, pain should never be sharp, severe, or worsening. (again see my previous blog for a more in depth convo about pain during rehab)

At my practice, we follow a simple rule: If your pain is less than a 5/10 and improving with movement, it’s likely safe to continue. But pushing through all pain can lead to setbacks or longer recovery times. Communication with your physical therapist is KEY

Myth # 3-- Physical therapy is just exercise

Exercise is just one piece of the puzzle. A skilled physical therapist combines manual therapy, education, mobility training, load management, and even lifestyle coaching to help you reach your goals. PHYSICAL THERAPY IS NOT ALSO JUST MASSAGE. A true physical therapist is well versed in the areas of exercise prescription, hands on techniques, lifestyle modifications and all the current research on pain/rehab in the medical field.

At Art of PT, every patient receives a customized treatment plan that addresses their unique body, sport, and recovery timeline, not a cookie-cutter program (like the usual corporate PT clinic).

Myth # 4-- PT is only for older adults

Physical therapy benefits everyone. From young athletes and pregnant/postpartum moms to desk workers and weekend warriors, PT helps people across all ages and activity levels recover from pain, prevent injury, and move better.

In fact, many of my patients in Naperville are active individuals looking to optimize performance, not just recover from an injury.

Myth # 5-- Once you start PT, you’re stuck forever

The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to make you independent, not dependent. Good PT empowers you with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to manage your body long after your sessions end.

You should graduate from PT with a clear plan for maintenance and prevention, not endless appointments.
